A better life, reaching your full potential with mental health

If being able to reach your potential, cope with the stress of daily life, contribute to your family and community and start each day without a sense of dread are important to you – then so is your mental health.

The challenges in meeting these simple goals are anything but simple and all too often the challenges are more obvious than the solutions. Most of us will, at some point in our lives, struggle with relationship problems, sometimes including separation and divorce, will be forced to cope with work or financial pressures, perhaps unemployment or retirement, we might also struggle with physical illness and pain and resort to using drugs or alcohol as a way of self-medicating to manage the pain. The list goes on and on and at times can feel overwhelming.

But there are practical things you can do to help support your mental health:
  • Eat well, get plenty of sleep and exercise regularly.

  • Spend time with friends, family, loved ones.

  • Talk about how you feel with people you trust.

  • Do enjoyable activities or join clubs.

  • Take time out and relax.

  • Don’t use alcohol to relax.

  • Talk to your doctor.

  • Set realistic goals for yourself.

Please be aware of these 5 simple things;

  • Your mental health is an important part of your overall health and wellbeing. You need good mental health to help you get through life's challenges, to have healthy relationships with others and to enjoy life.

  • Problems with mental health are common, and not a sign of weakness. It can take courage to admit there's a problem and to reach out for help.

  • Your mental health is like your physical health — the earlier you get onto it, the better.

  • There are many practical things you can do to help support your mental health.

  • Talk to people you trust or seek professional support.
